Daiwa Farm Cheese Gift Set from Kobayashi City
Thanks to a promotion from City-Cost regarding Kobayashi City I recently had the chance to try a cheese gift set from Daiwa Farm. I have always liked cheese, but good cheese is quite expensive in Japan, so I was excited to try it out.
Kobayashi is a city located in Miyazaki Prefecture. It is a nice place for hiking and farmhouse stays. I have not yet had the chance to visit Kobayashi City but looking at photos from tourist websites it seems like a place with nice landscapes and perfect for outdoor activities. I hope I will have the chance to visit it someday soon. As I have never been to a Japanese farm, it would certainly be interesting to stay at one.
Daiwa Farm is a small farm in Kobayashi City that is well known for cheese, ice-cream, yoghurt and other dairy products. The gift set I received looked like this.
It contained the following items and came with a pamphlet that offered some explanation and suggestions on how to eat them.
1 piece of “Tomadaiwa” cheese
1 piece of “Robidaiwa”
1 piece of Mozzarella cheese
2 cups of drink yoghurt
First, I tried the Tomadaiwa cheese. It is a hard cheese with a mild but nice taste to it. As the recommendation was to eat it with bread, I cut slices and put it onto German dark rye bread. By the way, I recommend having a cheese knife as cutting with a regular knife was not easy. Unfortunately, it did not go too well with German dark bread as this kind of bread has a very strong taste on its own and with the mild taste of the cheese you don’t taste a lot of cheese anymore. I think it might be better suited for baguettes or for just eating it on its own.
The next item I tried was the Drink Yoghurt. It had a rich and sweet flavour. As I usually eat cereal with yoghurt in the morning, I used the yoghurt for my cereal. As it is smooth it works quite well for cereal, however, I found it a little too sweet. I have been trying to reduce my sugar intake recently, so I usually eat yoghurt without sugar but this one seems to contain quite a lot.
Later, I tried the mozzarella and made mozzarella cheese as suggested in the Daiwa Farm pamphlet. The mozzarella also has a very mild taste and does not have the typical aftertaste of a mozzarella. You might want to cut back on seasoning a little, as you cover up the original taste of the mozzarella pretty easily.
The last item left to try was the Robidaiwa cheese. It was a soft cheese that was also laking the aftertaste that I was used to. As recommend, I put the Robidaiwa into a cream dish and made cream chicken with mushrooms. The cheese helped to enrich the flavour.
All in all the three types of cheese had a very mild and light taste that was quite different from the cheeses I used to eat when in Germany. If you are looking to try cheeses that offer an alternative taste to what you might be used to then, I can recommend the Daiwa Farm cheese.
