How to sell furniture on Jimoty
Jimoty is a Japanese platform for classified ads of all kinds. You can look for jobs, sell things you don't need anymore, search for friends and a lot more. It's kind of similar to craigslist.
A lot of people use Jimoty to sell or simply get rid of furniture they don't need anymore. In Japan it costs money to throw away furniture therefore it can be nice if you find someone to take your furniture for free or for a small price. Unlike other platforms where you usually ship out the items, on Jimoty most people insert their furniture as "pick up only" which is convenient for the seller but means that the buyer will need some kind of means to transport the item.
I would not recommend this platform if you are looking to sell a high prices as most people on Jimoty are looking for cheap or even free stuff.
As communication on Jimoty is in Japanese you will need enough Japanese skills to communicate without problems.
First, you need to register an account, which is free of charge. Then you can post your item (also free of charge).
You just need to take a few photos of the item, select the correct category, describe the condition of the item, and then enter your price and the closest train station. If you want to sell your item as "pick up only" you need to mention that in the description.
This is how the screen looks like for posting items.
If someone is interested in the item they will contact you via Jimoty message. Then you need to talk about when they will come to pick the item up and maybe negotiate the price etc.
I recently sold a sofa on Jimoty and was in contact with three people. The first two said they would come to pick it up but never appeared and suddenly stopped replying to my messages on the day of the scheduled pickup. In that case, you can report the accounts to Jimoty. I don't know if it helps much because they could just make new accounts.
The third person luckily arrived on the day of the scheduled pick-up, paid the price we agreed upon and was very happy with the sofa. I only sold it for 1,000 yen but the other option would have been to throw it away which would have cost a few hundred yen so I was satisfied with the transaction.
I just hope they will find a better way to deal with people that just cancel without leaving a message.

I’ve never heard of this. I wonder if it’s better than Mercari? I just discovered it less than a year ago and love it. Thanks
