Crumpets?!

I heard of this phenomenon several months before I got to experience it. I heard muttering amongst other expats about crumpets at the more central Tokyo branches of Seijo Ishii and started to check my local Chiba branch but to no avail. By the time I actually laid eyes on my objects of desire, I’d almost given up.

But there, one day, they were!

Crumpets?! photo

Crumpets! Real crumpets! Dense, spongy, and somehow far more filling than other breads!

It’s such a little thing - I like crumpets, but I wouldn’t say I outright loved them - but it’s so nice to enjoy something here that I had been missing. Or largely enjoy them, anyway - there’s a bit of an over-preserved feel to these that I’m not sure I noticed in the ones I bought when I lived in Australia? Maybe I’m not remembering properly. It’s not a dealbreaker, anyway; I keep buying these regardless!

How about you? Have you had any pleasant surprises (or otherwise!) at the imported food shops lately?

Great spot! Got a Seijo Ishii not far from me so I might see if they've got any in this weekend. Staying on Seijo Ishii and pleasant surprises, their "nama premium cheesecake" (生プレミアムチーズケーキ) at around 400 yen is one of the best desserts I've tasted in years. I love it so much that it's become a go-to treat of sorts. Highly recommended. I fear the day that they stop selling it!
