The description
In a lot of decent-sized supermarkets, you can find a small sub-section of the snack aisle where there are a lot of small, cheap and often kid friendly snacks set up. Nearby, some of the supermarkets around here even have little baskets for kids to put their shopping in.
Jyagashio Bata chips are a regular feature of these sections. Priced at a very reasonable 51 yen (59 yen including tax), they are a packet of four flat, large chips generously flavored with salt and butter.
The good
One of those things that Japan does really, really is portions and this is a typical example of that. If you feel like some chips and you’re looking to avoid overdoing them, either because you don’t want that much to eat or you know the limits of your own self-control, then these are perfect for you. They are also just plain good and the taste and the texture work really nicely. While still decidedly crisp, they manage to avoid being dry, and the flavour combination of salt and butter is a decided win.
The not so good
Of course, one of the things about portion control is that you really don’t get many chips in the packet. Four potato chips isn’t exactly a hearty snack, and getting more of them would mean a lot of waste in terms of packaging (and the price would quickly add up). I also find the shape of them a little unwieldy. They’re too big to shove the whole thing in your mouth, but biting them often leads to shattering more pieces than intended. This isn’t exactly a dealbreaker, but they’re a little difficult to eat if you’re in a hurry or on the move. These are quite minor drawbacks, though, and you presumably won’t be wanting that many chips if you buy a packet this small. I definitely recommend giving them a try!
