Saving money in Japan: less contact lens wearing

I've had glasses since I was about 9 years old, but I got contact lenses when I was about 18. From then until recent years I'd say I wore contacts the majority of the time, feeling like I didn't look as good wearing glasses.

It may have been partially the COVID years that encouraged me to ditch that, or working from home, but these days I wear glasses more than contacts. One thing I like about it (an unintended consequence) is that it saves me a fair bit of money. I typically get the 2 week contacts, and you get six lenses for each eye per box. Each box is around 3000 yen, so that's 6000 yen every 12 weeks. Obviously there's the additional cost of having to buy contact lens solution to keep them clean and stored properly, which adds up.

I've been wearing contacts a lot less in recent years, and I notice the money savings!

Contrast that with glasses – I typically go to Jins because they are quick and inexpensive, and I've purchased some pairs of glasses (frames and lenses) for around the same price as two contact lens boxes. Provided I don't need an update to my lenses when I get my annual eye check done, you can see how cheap wearing glasses over contacts can be.

I'm very grateful that the cost of glasses here is so reasonable, and they can be made on the spot in around 30 minutes at many places. In my home country, new glasses often set you back several hundred dollars, even with health insurance covering part of the expense.

If you need vision correction, do you opt for glasses, contacts, or a mix of both? Do you find prices here for glasses are cheaper than in your home country?
