Ginkgo – more than just a pretty tree
Autumn is probably one of my favorite times of year in Japan, because of all the beautiful seasonal color. In particular, the vivid yellows of ginkgo trees as their leaves change is something I really look forward to.
As well as simply being a beautiful tree to look at, ginkgos have nuts on them, which have been a staple in traditional medicines in various cultures (including Japanese culture) for centuries. They’re botanically classified as ginkgo biloba, and they've got a ton of health benefits!

They're an antioxidant powerhouse
One thing that ginkgo nuts get a lot of praise for is their antioxidant properties. They help protect the body from damage caused by harmful molecules called free radicals, and you can find them in a lot of other autumnal foods, too, such as sweet potatoes and persimmons. It's a great time of year for healthy eating!
It's suggested that they improve cognitive function
Some studies suggest that ginkgo nuts may enhance cognitive function, including memory and concentration. They are believed to increase blood flow to the brain, which can support mental clarity, and a lot of research studies have focused on their link in helping reduce the impacts of dementia/Alzheimer's.
Ginkgo biloba also helps reduce inflammation
Other studies have focused on ginkgo's link in reducing inflammation. This can be incredibly important for relieving chronic pain in illnesses like arthritis, improving joint health, and increasing people's quality of life overall.
They even impact respiratory health!
In traditional medicine, ginkgo nuts have been used to alleviate respiratory conditions like asthma and bronchitis. They're believed to help open airways and ease breathing, so if you have any asthma sufferers in your household (or you suffer from the condition yourself), you may want to look into ginkgo supplements as a natural remedy in conjunction with any modern medicine you take.
Important to note!
Consuming ginkgo nuts in excess can be harmful, as they contain substances that can be toxic if they're not properly processed. It's super important to only consume properly prepared ginkgo nuts obtained from reputable sources, so don't go thinking you can pick them off a tree and just start eating them!
As with any natural remedy, it's always smart to consult with a healthcare professional before incorporating anything into your diet, especially if you have existing health conditions or are taking medication.
Have you tried using ginkgo supplements or eating ginkgo nuts before? Did you find that they had any impact on your overall health?

You have to go easy on them, just as you noted. More than a handful a day can make you sick. But the creamy texture and umami make them irresistable, right? I can't say if they improved my health, though.

@TonetoEdo I think sometimes there is an element of "maybe it's an old wives tale" in terms of their efficacy... but I thought it was interesting that there have been scientific research studies done on them!
