Japan's happiness (and what makes it up?)

Happiness, and I guess mental health as a whole, are a couple of topics that interest me significantly. I wrote fairly recently about the results of the annual World Happiness Report, and as I've been browsing the news over the past week another "happiness-themed" article caught my eye via the Mainichi.

It focused on a study conducted by global polling company Ipsos, which explored the happiness of people from 30 different countries for a two-month period between December 2024 and January 2025. It offered some fairly alarming results for life here, with Japan coming in with the lowest satisfaction and expectations for quality of life, and only 60% of people feeling happy—a score of 27th out of 30 for that metric.

The most cited factor for feeling unhappy was a person's economic situation, and the most cited one for feeling happy was a person's relationships with their family.

Would you say you feel happy here on a day-to-day basis? Do factors like economic stress (or lack thereof) and familial relationships have a noticeable impact on happiness for you?
