Keeping your hanami experience more budget-friendly

I saw an article via the Japan Times this week, and it focused on the growing expenses of hanami celebrations. One key point was that the cost of typical hanami food items has grown by a whopping 21.4% in the past six years, with items like onigiri a key part of that owing to the rise in rice prices.

The article also mentioned that the average price people are spending on hanami gatherings in 2025 is around ¥2,997 ($20). It got me thinking on some ways to keep hanami costs low, while still enjoying yourself and the best of the season.

Bring food from home

This is the biggest one, in my opinion—but it's a lot easier on the budget to bring food from home than it is to purchase items from a convenience store. You might have to do some extra legwork in terms of preparation, but you can stand to save a lot of money.

Pick places with no admission fee

Various parks and gardens here come with admission fees, and while they are undoubtedly beautiful, there are plenty of just as pretty options that are free. If you stick to those, your wallet will thank you!

Stay local

If you are watching your budget this hanami season, I think staying local is also a great way to save some money. You're not having to pay as much for things like petrol, tolls, or public transportation fares, and it gives you a better appreciation of your own area.

Are there any other tips you'd suggest for keeping hanami costs lower?
