Resources for finding ski/snowboarding resorts in Japan

There is a query in the Q&A section on the site that asked about good ski resorts with public transport connectivity. I'm not an expert, but having lived in snow country for a while now these are some things that people looking for ski advice might find helpful. This is more a general guide rather than being focused on resorts with access to public transport, however—hopefully it's useful nonetheless!

This article covers some of the best ski resorts in the Kanto Region—I think this is particularly useful for folks who live in Tokyo and don't want to travel too far but still want to get their fix of all things winter. Obviously not all of them are easy with public transport but they do provide some options to consider.

Snow Japan is an excellent site in English, which is helpful if you're an expat living here with limited knowledge of Japanese. A good place to start on that site is the Ski Areas Index, which has a long listing of resorts in different prefectures. It's also quite helpful if you want to know things like how many lifts/courses a particular resort has at a glance.

Local tourism sites that already have a big ski/boarding presence can be a good resource, like Niseko Tourism. Typing in a keyword like "ski" on general prefecture tourism pages like Niigata Tourism will also yield some info!

I always think that exploring on Instagram is helpful, and hashtags like #スキー場 (ski resort) or #日本スキー (Japan skiing) are a couple that can prove useful in getting a bit of inspiration. Obviously you would then need to drill down a bit more to find out where the pictures were taken!

If you like researching travel spots/winter destinations, are there any tips or resources you'd give others who are looking for help finding ski/snowboard destinations?
