How do you feel about frozen treats in the summer? Does tea appeal to you? Why not come down to Shizuoka prefecture where they have started the Chagori Project. Chagori Project The Chagori Project features different restaurants and cafes who have made shaved ice treats inspired by tea flavors. These flavors can be as simple as drizzling green tea syrup over some ice, or as complicated as creating a matcha ice ball which has Ieyasu-kun’s face, all complete with strawberry ears. Shizuoka may be the holy land for green tea, but even if green tea isn’t your favorite tea, you still will be able to find something that you can enjoy. *A link will be provided at the bottom of the page for those who are interested. Unfortunately, there is no English currently. T’s green omachi (Instagram) This weekend I was fortunate enough to be able to go to this Japanese style café located just a 10-minute walk away from the station. Shizuoka-shi, Aoi-ku, Shichiken-cho 16-7 Omachi BIRU 1B Business hours: 10:00 ~ 19:00 Aoi no Kyo(あおいの郷)Price: 1,155 yen (including tax) The special for this store is a black tea shaved ice glass in the style of a parfait. Starting from the top, under the cute umbrella you’ll see some mitsu dango as the appetizer to the main dish. Once you start digging into the ice where all the black tea syrup is, you’ll find that at the bottom of the ice parfait is strawberries and warabi mochi. You can customize your flavor with three ingredients provided to you: daifuku beans, green tea that has been simmered in soy sauce and mirin, and renyu. There are also plenty of free drink options available, but I paid a little extra to get an iced matcha latte. If you are ever looking for a bit of respite from the summer and COVID-19, why not come and try some chagori? Chagori website: https://chagori.com/
