Gallery - Hot Apple Custard Pie to go
A true classic, the McDonald's apple pie has received a bit of an upgrade in this most recent limited-edition offering. A bit pricier at 120 yen versus the normal 100 yen for a regular hot apple pie, is the custard worth the extra 20 yen? Whereas the original apple pie's famous packaging is a granny-smith-apple green, the custard apple pie is a bright yellow, much like a cartoonish custard color. Other than that, it's very familiar in every other way. Interestingly enough, when removed from the packaging, the pie crust is a different color than the regular apple pie. Notice how much more yellow it looks. Perhaps the custard leaked through the uncooked dough, or perhaps a slightly different dough was formulated to complement the new flavor. The first bite didn't yield much custard. Rather, a warm mouthful of the standard apple pie took its place. A bit of custard peaked through, as you can see in the picture, but it wasn't significant enough to make a difference in flavor. Trying again, I evened out the bite. This time, I only got a bite of custard. So far, the eating process was not going well. Armed with this new knowledge, I unhinged my jaw and took the biggest bite that I could. Finally, my tastebuds were greeted with a good mix of the two flavors. Surprisingly, the flavors mixed very well together. However, it was difficult for me to continue taking large bites like that. I remedied this by taking two smaller bites on each side, but even that was a hassle. Even still, I would get this again, and I will lament when this seasonal item is taken off the menu.
