  • Great Bagels!

I’ve eaten bagels all over Japan, and they’ve all tasted like a round version of white bread to me, lacking the sinewy chewiness and depth of flavor that I crave when having bagels. I was hoping that Bagel Cafe 88 would have something closer to what I remember eating, and I was pleasantly surprised when diving into their Everything bagel, the closest facsimile to a bagel from the US I’ve had in more than a decade in Japan. The amount of seeds and onion was glorious and supremely tasty. Some of the flavors are seasonal, lending themselves to Japanese palates, but the lynchpins of western bagels are also represented. The store is compact, and the there are a few places inside to sit and enjoy bagel sandwiches or coffees and teas, but on a good weather day, you could happily sit outside on some of the stools provided for customers. The service was speedy and friendly, and the prices were reasonable. If you’re passing through this neighborhood in Tokyo and are craving a delicious bagel, I highly recommend checking this place out.
