Spectacular gorge boat ride scenery
I visited Nagatoro Gorge in the summer and was struck by the grandeur of the gorge. The boat rides afford views of the spectacular rock formations and "Iwadatami", metamorphic rocks resembling piles of tatami. Some parts of the river ride are calm and soothing. Other stretches have rapids so do your best to stay in the boat. Prepare to get wet! Various river cruise companies do the three-kilometer routes.

Must do in Nagatoro
The Nagatoro Line Kudari is a boat ride, down the Arakawa, and it is one of the key attractions in Nagatoro Town. You can ride the boat any dry day between March and December. The boat rides are even available in January and February, but they have a 'kotatsu' on the boat for those months only. You can pick up tickets at an office at Nagatoro station or down at the river. Its not cheap, but its a lot of fun! There are different packages depending on what course you take. The standard course costs 900 yen for children and 1800 yen for adults.
