Jiro-style ramen
Funabashi City's station front is rather austere with modern concrete and steel but go a little ways from the south side to Nakadori Shotengai for some retro atmosphere. This is where I discovered Mugendai, a Jiro-style ramen shop. The bowls are monstrously huge, so bring an appetite. I erred on the side of caution, ordering tsukemen with ajitama. The volume was suitable for me, an obachan. Added bonus was the seasonal addition of yuzu zest. When I visited, the staff preparing the noodles were not Japanese but Vietnamese. I trust them as Japan and Vietnam share noodle culture.
