The description

Kit Kat Golds are a variety of Kit Kat, in this case utilizing caramel white chocolate. I purchased this multipack of eleven chocolate bars at my local Sun Drug drugstore for 289 yen, including tax.

The good

KitKats are great, and Japan is well-established when it comes to producing a wide range of interesting and delicious flavours. In a way, the Kit Kat Gold isn’t really that unique. It’s just caramel flavored white chocolate on your usual milk chocolate Kit Kat wafer base. It’s not some traditional Japanese flavour, or an unexpected spice, or anything like that. But for all its simplicity, Kit Kat Golds are SO good. It’s Olympic season at the time of writing and you are welcome to insert your KitKat gold/gold medal pun of choice here if you wish. I think they genuinely could be my favorite KitKats to date. I’m a big caramel fan generally, and the caramel-white chocolate is smooth and sweet, without being overly so, and I could swear there is a hint of coconut in there. You get 11 Kit Kat bars per multipack, which gives you eleven chances to figure out if that’s so. The chocolate base matches it perfectly, in any case, and the wafer adds a nice edge to the rest of the smooth experience.

The not so good

For me, the biggest issue with these is how dangerously, addictively good they are. Sure, there is potential for portion control, but I personally find it very hard to stop eating them once I start. Eleven chocolate bars for 289 yen may be more than enough for some. It may not be enough for others. According to Nestle, these are meant to be a regular product, ie. a long-term part of the KitKat range. That said, as noted above, the packs I find have already been relegated to the back shelves of my local drug store. I’m not sure how long these wonderful chocolates will actually end up being with us. I’m hoping to enjoy them as much and for as long as I can, though!
