2024 Word of the Year differences between Japan & home
Does your home country do a "word of the year"? I honestly didn't know that my home country did until I noticed Japan doing it annually. I guess I find it interesting because it's a little snapshot into the cultural, political, and social climate over the past year, and I definitely think there's some fun nuance to what gets picked. Japan's WOTY was "gold" (kinda vanilla and uninspiring, as agreed upon by this JT article) but I guess I can see why it was chosen.
Gold as a word is a bit overdone IMO and I think better words could've been picked.
Australia opted for “enshittification” (I had to cackle at that) as their word for 2024, which is apparently a slang term about the deterioration of products and services online. Another shortlist pick on the list that didn't win was overtourism, which I think many countries, including Japan, can relate to quite a bit at the moment!
Do you have any better suggestions other than gold as the 2024 word of the year? Personally I probably would've gone with something heat or global warming related (it was a record breaker), but that's likely going to happen year-on-year for who knows how long. In saying that, gold has been used as the WOTY many times, so I guess there's precedent ;) Something to do with increase/growing could have been good, too—it could have applied not just to temperature increases but things like cost of living increases too.
Also, I'm curious to hear what your home country's word of the year was (if they have one!)
