Useful subreddits for life in Japan
Recently, City-Cost contributor KevinC was asking about estimates for PR being granted, and the subreddit r/japanresidents does a monthly wrap-up of people who have been granted their PR and those who are still waiting, which can be helpful if you're trying to estimate your own timeframes!
It got me thinking about other subreddits that I find useful for various things – these are some of them.
This is one of the bigger subreddits out there, with over half a million members – and it specifically is for residents of Japan only (as much as that can be controlled), with requests that you only post if you're living here. People ask just about everything in this subreddit, including tips on dealing with mold, where to find winter tires in Tokyo, or even some amusing ones like this one:
The truly pressing question ;)
With over 3 million members, this is a great subreddit for getting trip inspiration or even helping out others who might need advice about things to see and do in your neck of the woods. I like reading people's trip reports on here, since they definitely assist with itinerary planning!
Less of a help forum and more of a visual one, I like this subreddit for serving as a reminder of just how much beauty there is to enjoy here. There are some really stunning examples of photography to enjoy in this one.
This is a handy resource (along with the hive mind of info here on City-Cost!) if you're in the planning to move phase of your Japan expat adventure.
Are you a Redditor? Any other subreddits you'd recommend to folks already living here or anyone looking at making the move?

The subreddit r/japanFinance is active with lots of helpful info there. In preparation for trips, I sometimes look at city or regional subreddits such as r/Okinawa and r/Tokyo.

@TonetoEdo I'll have to check out the finance one, and good tips about checking the regional pages!
