On slower starts to the new year

Something I've really grown to appreciate after living here for so long is that the new year isn't a haze of partying, alcohol, and fireworks like in my home country. Maybe it's because I'm quite introverted by nature and the idea of staying up until midnight isn't very appealing anymore, but I feel much more aligned with Japan's approach. Getting up early to see the first sunrise of the year is more my style nowadays!

I also love the first visit to the shrine of the year, although sometimes it can be beneficial to wait a couple of days past the "peak" new year period if you like avoiding crowds. This is another way of welcoming in a year that I feel fits my life stage and personality more—a time of reflection rather than revelry.

Are you up early this morning to watch the first sunrise or visit your local shrine?
