Living in Kumamoto
Kumamoto Prefecture is located on the western island of Kyushu. Its population is around 1.8 million. The majority, 1.4 million, of these people live in the prefecture's capital, Kumamoto City. Kumamoto Prefecture is home to an active volcano, Mt. Aso. Mt. Aso is the largest volcano in Japan, and one of the largest in the world. The delicacy of basashi, raw horse meat, can be eaten in Kumamoto Prefecture. Kumamoto Castle, dating back to 1467, is one of three premier castles in Japan. Tourists can visit the castle in Kumamoto City's chuo-ward.
